Studio Owner / Producer

“I have over 24 years’ sound engineering experience, I guess you could say I have a well trained ear when it comes to perfecting sound. It’s a skill I like to think I’ve mastered over the years, based on a natural ability to hone in on precise elements of the music, to ensure each layer, each instrument, is enhanced to its optimum – so that it ultimately moves the listener. Being originally a graduate of architecture, I guess you could call me an architect of sound.“

Where it all began
“After a 3 month course at teaching studio Spirit in Manchester, I was offered a job as a sound engineer with Star Trak Studio. The best way to learn my trade was through hands on experience, many long, unsociable hours, learning everything I could about the recording process, technical equipment, achieving particular effects and production techniques and interacting with real live bands – even a session for Oasis before they got signed.

Before long I was producing and mixing bands in the studio. Pleased with the results, I was really honoured to be invited on the road to mix sound for their live tours. Since then I’ve had the privilege of traveling around the world many times with some of the biggest names in the music industry, mixing shows for audiences of up to 185,000.

In the studio I like to help artists to find and create their unique sound. One which connects with their audience in a captivating way. Achieving clarity and depth – the distinctive ‘natural’ sound of our Recording Studio helps us to deliver that. Endorsement by the music industry’s leading equipment manufacturers helps too. Our extensive kit from SSL, Sennheiser and Neumann, and our full set up enables us to create a larger than life soundscape.”

“To date it would be touring the world mixing sound in Stadiums and Arenas with 5 Seconds of Summer, mixing on the main stage of Glastonbury with Lily Allen and Plan B, T in the Park, V Festival, Oxegen. Supports with One Direction, Adele, Paul McCartney, U2 and Take That but one of my most lasting memories will be mixing a show in John Peel’s back garden.”

Producer / Engineer

In just six months Mark went from tea boy to key engineer and mixer on Plan B’s Number 1, Mercury Prize, MOBO and BRIT nominated album ‘ILL Manors’. Mark was still an assistant when the call for the Plan B session came through in the middle of the night in June 2012. This is a huge step-up in anyone’s terms and he rose to the challenge perfectly. The next 5 days and nights were spent working constantly with Ben Drew to get the album finished before a strict deadline. The last mix was sent to mastering at 6am after a marathon 26 hour session without a single break.

The reaction to the album and the recognition it has received speaks for itself and is a testament to Mark’s work. Since then Mark has worked with New Order, Danny O’Dongohue (The Script), 5 Seconds Of Summer, Nine Black Alps and many others including Roller Trio, nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2012. Mark is already receiving recognition as a rising star, having recently been profiled by Audio Pro International in their Rising Stars section and being a top 4 finalist in Pro Sound Awards Studio Engineer of the Year category.

“Working with all the artists that come through Edge is it’s own reward but one of my stand out moments so far is Nine Black Alps 5th album, it was loud and a lot of fun to record. Also the New Order documentary that was filmed here was great, getting hands on with the gear they used on Blue Monday doesn’t happen every day!”
